Before leaving, Claire mentioned that Mark had purchased both rings at a jeweler near the lake.
She showed me the store’s name.
It matched the receipt in his duffel bag.
That evening, I called Ben, Mark’s oldest fishing friend.
“Was Mark fishing with you Saturday afternoon?”
Ben hesitated.
“Not exactly.”
“Was he with Claire?”
“Lisa, I don’t want to get involved.”
“He’s been telling Claire I’m dead.”
“What?”
I explained the ceremony.
Ben swore.
“Mark told us you separated last year.”
“We haven’t.”
“He said you were living apart while sorting out the divorce.”
“Ben, he slept beside me Sunday night.”
Ben admitted Mark had introduced Claire during an earlier trip.
None of the fishing friends attended the ceremony.
They’d believed Mark was already separated.
“I thought your marriage was over,” Ben said.
“Did you ever ask me?”
“No.”
“Then you only knew what Mark wanted you to know.”
