Chapter 1: The Guest Who Forgot Her Place 027

I felt sick.

“Did you know this was a forgery?”

Kayla nodded, barely.

“Daniel said it was only a draft.”

“Then why bring it here?”

“Because he wanted me to replace it with a real signature.”

I stared at her.

“You were going to ask me to sign it?”

She began to cry.

“I thought I could convince you.”

“By telling me what?

That you needed money?”

“I didn’t know what else to do!”

Andrew picked up the letter.

“Did Daniel tell you what would happen if she signed?”

“He said the loan would be approved, and then we’d have enough money to get away.”

“Get away where?”

“Somewhere else.”

“With twenty-four thousand dollars?”

She nodded.

“Was he going to give you half?”

“No.”

“Then what were you getting?”

Kayla’s mouth tightened.

“He said he’d take care of me.”

Andrew’s expression turned cold.

“That’s not an answer.”
