Chapter 1: The Guest Who Forgot Her Place 027

She looked away.

“Bad.”

Andrew folded his arms.

“Did he ask you to bring us anything?”

Kayla hesitated.

Then she reached into her handbag and removed a large envelope.

“I was supposed to give you this.”

I didn’t touch it.

“What is it?”

“Loan documents.”

“Why?”

“He said the bank needed an updated authorization.

He told me if you signed it, the money would be released.”

“Why would I sign something after discovering a fraudulent application?”

“He said the first application had been rejected and that this was a new one.”

Andrew took a photograph of the envelope before opening it.

Inside were several pages of financial documents, a business authorization form, and a typed letter explaining that I had agreed to guarantee a commercial loan for Harborlight Home Services.

My signature appeared at the bottom.

It was an almost perfect imitation.

Almost.

The capital letter at the beginning of my name had a loop that I never made.
