She looked down.
“He promised me a job and a place to stay.”
I could barely believe it.
She had risked our home, our marriage, and my financial future for a promise that amounted to nothing more than a stranger’s vague assurances.
“What did he say about me?”
I asked.
Kayla frowned.
“What?”
“What was he planning to do after the money came through?”
She didn’t respond.
“Did he intend to leave me with the debt?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did he intend to disappear?”
“I don’t know!”
“Did he ever care about you?”
Kayla’s face crumpled.
“I thought he did.”
There it was.
Beneath the selfishness and deception was a woman who had mistaken attention for love and promises for safety.
I could understand the vulnerability.
I could not excuse what she had done with it.
“We’re taking this to the lawyer,” I said.
