Chapter 1: The Guest Who Forgot Her Place 027

Meanwhile, someone else had been quietly preparing to betray both of us.

The next morning, Kayla came downstairs fully dressed.

She looked exhausted.

“I want to talk,” she said.

Andrew moved toward the living room, but I asked him to stay.

“This concerns both of us.”

Kayla looked at the table, where the loan application and printed messages lay in neat stacks.

“I called Daniel.”

My stomach tightened.

“When?”

“Last night.

After you left.”

“What did he say?”

“He told me not to worry.

He said the message was a bluff and that he would handle everything.”

“Did he explain why he was threatening me?”

She shook her head.

“He said you were making things difficult.”

I let out a humorless laugh.

“I’m making things difficult by refusing to let someone borrow twenty-four thousand dollars in my name?”

“I know how it sounds.”

“How does it sound to you?”
