After my husband djed, a nurse accidentally mentioned that a woman had been visiting him for several weeks before his d3ath — a few days later, she came to my house and said, "So you don't know what he left you, do you?"

Chapter 6: The Hearing Martin Expected to Win

The emergency hearing began at nine the next morning.

Martin sat beside three lawyers while Claire, Evelyn, and I shared one narrow table.

Martin’s attorney stood.

“Mrs.

Mercer is relying on documents supplied by a woman falsely claiming to be her husband’s sister.”

Claire rose halfway from her chair.

“I have a birth record.”

“A copy,” the attorney replied.

“The original was conveniently damaged.”

Evelyn touched Claire’s arm.

“Let him finish.”

The attorney handed the judge a sealed report.

“Our independent laboratory found no biological connection between Claire and the late Jack Mercer.”

I stared at Claire.

“How did they test Jack?”

“They didn’t,” she whispered.

Martin’s attorney smiled.

“Mr.

Mercer provided a sample during his treatment.”

“That sample was never released,” I said.

Martin turned toward me.

“Jack signed the authorization.”

Evelyn examined the paper.

“This signature is dated two days after he could no longer hold a pen.”

The judge adjusted her glasses.

“Do you have proof of that?”

“I can obtain medical testimony.”

“Today, Ms.

Ross?”

Evelyn said nothing.

The judge placed the report beside my mortgage file.

“Until identity is established, I am freezing the disputed shares.

The foreclosure may proceed under the existing contract.”

Martin folded his hands.

“Thank you, Your Honor.”

My fingers closed around Jack’s wedding ring beneath my blouse.

Martin had won the one thing that could not wait.

Then the courtroom door opened.

The nurse from Jack’s hospital hurried inside with Daniel.

“I’m sorry,” she said.

“Parking was impossible.”

Martin’s attorney stood.

“This witness was not disclosed.”

“She is here to authenticate a record,” Evelyn said.

The nurse faced the judge.

“Jack’s hand was severely swollen on the date shown.

I signed his medication chart because he could not sign it himself.”

Martin rose.

“A nurse cannot identify forgery.”

“No,” she replied.

“But the hospital camera can identify the man who entered Jack’s room carrying that form.”

Daniel connected a laptop to the courtroom screen.

Martin appeared in the hallway footage, followed by the bank employee Daniel had suspended.

The judge looked at Martin.

“Did you visit Jack Mercer that day?”

“I visited my nephew.”

Claire stood.

“Five minutes ago, you said I wasn’t his sister.

Now Jack is your nephew?”

Martin’s attorney grabbed his sleeve.

“Do not answer.”

Graham stepped forward with his cardboard box.

“I can answer.”

Martin’s face drained of color.

“You signed a confidentiality agreement.”

“It doesn’t protect falsified records.”

Graham placed a flash drive on Evelyn’s table.

“Martin ordered me to create the laboratory request under Claire’s name.

The sample tested belonged to someone else.”

The judge’s voice sharpened.

“Mr.

Vale, remain seated.”

Martin reached for his phone.

Daniel moved between him and the aisle.

Evelyn handed over Jack’s recorder and Graham’s payment records.

“We request an immediate suspension of the foreclosure.”

Martin’s attorney whispered urgently, then stood.

“My client requests a recess.”

The judge shook her head.

“Your client will surrender his passport before leaving this building.”

Martin turned to me.

“Take the house, Hannah.

I’ll clear the mortgage and give you half a million dollars.

End this now.”

“You threatened my children yesterday.”

“I offered you security.”

“You offered me silence.”

The judge suspended the foreclosure and ordered an independent audit of the trust.

Martin was instructed not to contact us or enter any Mercer property.

Outside the courtroom, Claire held my hands.

“We stopped him.”

Evelyn approached with a fresh document.

“Not yet.

Martin filed something electronically during the hearing.”

“What did he file?”

“A petition claiming Jack signed away his shares before his d3ath.”

Graham read the attached witness name and went still.

“What is it?” I asked.
