Chapter 1: The Woman in His Hospital Room

After my husband djed, a nurse accidentally mentioned that a woman had been visiting him for several weeks before his d3ath — a few days later, she came to my house and said, "So you don't know what he left you, do you?"

I'm six months pregnant; I have a 4-year-old daughter, and my husband, Jack, was diagnosed with terminal c@ncer.

The next months were extremely difficult.

We fought for his life in every way we could.

We spent all the money we had, which wasn't much to begin with, on his treatment.

I sold the jewelry I had and even took out a loan against our house.

But nothing helped.

Jack djed without ever witnessing the birth of his second child.

I was devastated.

Jack and I had been together since high school.

He was the love of my life.

I was now a single mother, drowning in debt.

I had no idea how I was supposed to keep living after that.

When I came to the hospital to pick up his belongings, the nurse had neatly packed everything into a bag and handed it to me.

There was some kind of sweater showing on top.

A woman's sweater.

It wasn't mine.

I pulled it out and asked the nurse:

"Excuse me, I think you mixed something up.

This definitely isn't Jack's, and it isn't mine either."

The nurse frowned slightly and said:

"Hmm, no.

This definitely came from your husband's room.

It belonged to the woman who kept visiting him.

Wasn't she a relative of yours?"

I nearly fainted right there.

The truth was, Jack had grown up an orphan, and he had no family left.

And as for my family, I would've known if someone had been visiting him.

When I asked the nurse how often the woman had come by, she said:

"Well, I hadn't seen her here before, but during the last few weeks before Jack djed, she was here pretty often."

You can imagine the worst about your husband in a situation like that, right?

But I didn't want to jump to conclusions, so I begged the nurse to help me figure out who the woman was.

Finally, I saw footage from one of the hospital's security cameras, and there she was — a woman I'd never seen before in my life.

I had truly no idea who she was.

I went home with those thoughts, and they wouldn't leave me alone for several days.

I decided I needed to find her and ask what she had been doing in my husband's hospital room.

And why hadn't Jack told me anything about her?

What secrets had he been keeping?

Then one evening, someone knocked on the door.

I opened it, and there she was.

The same woman who had been visiting Jack.

She was thin, looked a little exhausted, and her eyes were wet with tears.

She held out an envelope to me and said:

"He asked me to give this to you only after his d3ath.

Not before."

My hands were shaking, but I asked what was inside.

She said softly:

"So you don't know what he left you, do you?"

When I opened the envelope, I almost fainted after reading what was written in his letter.

And when I realized who that woman really was, I burst into tears.
