Her Husband Returned for the Brace, But the Porch Had Become a Witness-uyennhi - Storyreel001

The SUV passed the scarecrow before its brake lights flashed.

My husband had finally realized I was gone.

Then he saw me sitting on the neighbor’s covered porch, my injured ankle stretched forward, a towel wrapped around my shoulders, and mud still drying along the hem of the torn clothes his sister had forced me to wear for their photographs.

He got out before the SUV had fully settled.

His mother followed immediately. His sister came behind her, still carrying the same purse she had used when she stood in the field deciding which pictures looked most convincing.

My husband stopped at the bottom of the porch steps.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then his mother did what she had been doing all afternoon.

She started explaining.

“There was a misunderstanding,” she said. “We only went home because the storm came so suddenly. We thought she was safe.”

The neighbor stood beside my chair.
