The Clever Idea Behind the Device
The genius of the bicycle dynamo is that it uses energy that is already available.
When you ride a bicycle, the wheels are spinning.
Instead of allowing all of that rotational motion to simply move the bicycle forward, a dynamo takes a tiny portion of that motion and converts it into electrical energy.
The principle is closely related to the basic operation of an electrical generator: mechanical energy is converted into electrical energy.
That might sound complicated, but the basic idea is wonderfully straightforward.
Wheel turns.
Dynamo turns.
Electricity is produced.
Light comes on.
It is an elegant example of mechanical engineering solving an everyday problem with relatively little technology.
Why So Many People Get It Wrong
Mystery-object challenges work because context matters.
Give someone a photograph of a modern smartphone and almost everyone knows what they are looking at.
Take away the context from a familiar object, however, and recognition becomes much harder.
