Its purpose has largely disappeared from everyday life.
Why Does It Look So Strange?
The first clue is the shape.
A traditional bottle dynamo is compact and mechanical. It contains components designed to transfer the spinning motion of a bicycle wheel into electrical power.
There is generally a small roller that presses against the tire.
As the tire turns, the roller turns.
Inside the device, that motion drives a generator.
The result is electricity.
For someone familiar with modern technology, the idea can seem almost surprisingly simple.
Today, a bicycle light may be powered by a rechargeable battery, USB charging system, or compact disposable batteries. You can install the light, press a button, and forget about the mechanics involved.
An old dynamo worked differently.
The bicycle itself provided the energy needed to generate the light.
No charging cable was necessary.
No battery replacement was required.
As long as the wheel was turning and the system was functioning properly, the generator could produce electricity.
