We watched it on his laptop in the courthouse parking garage while rain hammered the concrete outside.
Michael appeared on the screen.
Alive.
That was the first cruelty.
His hair was too long.
His tie was crooked.
He was sitting in his office.
He rubbed his face the way he always did when he was tired.
Then he looked directly into the camera.
“Em.”
I broke.
One syllable.
Six years collapsed.
Richard reached toward the laptop.
I stopped him.
“No.”
Michael continued.
“If you’re seeing this, then I either became paranoid enough to embarrass myself, or I was right.”
He gave a small smile.
The smile I had loved.
“I really hope I embarrassed myself.”
I pressed my fist against my mouth.
“I found what Mom has been doing.”
He explained the foundation accounts.
The forged expenses.
Properties.
Insurance changes.
Then his expression changed.
“There’s something else.”
The rain seemed louder.
