I thought that would be the end.
It wasn’t.
The last hearing took place on a rainy Thursday.
Richard waited outside the courthouse.
He looked older than when I first met him.
Or maybe I had learned to see him more clearly.
“You okay?” he asked.
“I think so.”
He nodded.
Then he handed me an envelope.
My name was written across it.
Emily.
The handwriting stopped my breath.
Michael.
I knew every curve.
Every uneven letter.
I could not touch it.
“Where did you get this?”
Richard swallowed.
“It was inside the materials he gave me.”
“You had this for six years?”
“I didn’t know it existed until my legal team catalogued the original evidence box last month. It had slipped behind the inner lining.”
My fingers trembled as I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
And a small memory card.
Richard pointed toward his car.
“There’s a video.”
