“Go back.”
I did.
There were calls before the wedding.
A 27-minute call six days before Daniel married her.
Another two days before.
Another early morning after the rehearsal dinner.
Daniel pushed his chair back. “Mom, stop.”
I closed the laptop.
He stared at the floor. “She married me anyway.”
I didn’t know what to say.
At midnight, Mark texted me.
Working late. Don’t wait up.
Daniel read it.
“Answer him.”
“What do I say?”
“Say okay.”
So I did.
Mark came home after one.
Daniel had already left.
I was in bed pretending to sleep.
Mark showered before getting under the covers.
That detail stayed with me.
He was careful enough to wash another woman off before lying beside me.
Then he kissed my shoulder. “Love you.”
I kept my eyes closed.
The next morning, I called a divorce attorney.
Daniel called one too.
Neither lawyer told us to do anything dramatic.
