Daniel stared at me.
Then he nodded.
Dad had been an accountant. Whenever something went wrong, he used to say, “First find out what is true. Then decide what it costs.”
So that’s what we did.
Daniel called out of work. Then we went to my house.
Mark wasn’t home.
We sat at my kitchen table and started preserving everything.
I saved the hotel photos and video somewhere Mark couldn’t access.
Daniel saved copies too.
Then we checked finances.
I didn’t empty accounts.
I downloaded statements.
Bank accounts. Credit cards. Retirement. Mortgage.
Daniel did the same with the accounts he shared with Jenna.
He and Jenna had only been married three months, but they’d combined expenses and were saving toward a house.
Then we checked phone activity.
Jenna’s number appeared far more often than I expected.
Not for weeks.
For months.
Daniel leaned over my shoulder.
