“Three days ago,” I said, pulling my phone from my purse and tapping a button connected to the dining room’s Bluetooth speaker system, “Brandon gave me an ultimatum. He told me that if I didn’t put Leo and Lucas into foster care, the wedding was off.”
Gasps erupted around the table. Brandon’s mother covered her mouth in shock.
“That’s a lie!” Brandon sputtered, his face flushing crimson. “She’s making this up!”
I pressed play on the recording I had made in my living room three nights prior.
Brandon’s distinct, aggressive voice blasted through the speakers: “I’m NOT raising someone else’s kids. Put them in foster care, or the wedding is OFF. I’m not running a CHARITY.”
The entire room went dead silent.
Brandon stood frozen, looking like a deer caught in headlights. His father’s face turned thunderous red. His mother looked at her son with absolute horror and disgust.
