For years, I’d believed my father had abandoned our family.
I’d spent my childhood wondering why he never came back.
Now I was being told that he’d been trying to protect us.
“Daniel,” I whispered, “is my father alive?”
Another silence.
Then he said:
“No.”
My eyes filled with tears.
“When did he die?”
“Three years ago.”
I felt like the entire world had tilted
beneath me.
Three years.
My father had been alive three years ago.
And I’d never known.
“Who knew?”
“Mrs. Whitmore. Her husband. Me… and the people who wanted him silenced.”
I looked at the tracking device sitting on the mechanic’s workbench.
Suddenly everything made sense.
The accusations.
The note.
The hidden box.
The messages.
Someone was terrified I would open that box.
I forced the lock with a metal tool.
Inside were folders, photographs, bank statements and a small envelope.
