I became a private driver for a wealthy widow because I needed money after she accused me of stealing, I found a hidden note from her in the car and was left stunned.

At least, that’s what I’d always been told.

I turned the photograph over.

On the back, someone had written a date from twenty-four years earlier.

And beneath it were four words:

“He never really left.”

My phone rang again.

This time, it was Daniel.

I answered without saying a word.

“Stan?”

“Yes.”

“Mrs. Whitmore told

me you found the box.”

“How do you know?”

“Because she asked me to make sure you did.”

My eyes moved toward the black metal box.

“What is inside?”

“Everything your father left behind.”

My heart stopped.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

Daniel continued.

“Your father worked for Mrs. Whitmore’s husband. He discovered that someone inside the company was stealing millions of dollars through fake accounts.”

“So why didn’t he expose them?”

“He tried.”

There was silence.

“Then he disappeared.”

I sat down on the garage floor.
