“Nina, we share a bedroom. We eat dinner together. Last week, we talked about having a baby.”
“What?”
“He wants us to start trying before Christmas.”
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then Nina said, “He told me you’d already discussed our relationship.”
I almost laughed.
“He hasn’t mentioned you once.”
“He said you understood the marriage wasn’t working. That you were struggling financially, so he didn’t want to make you leave.”
I gripped the phone.
That was Everett’s version of our marriage?
A generous man allowing his helpless former wife to stay in his home?
“How long have you been seeing him?”
“About eight months.”
Eight months.
I thanked her and ended the call.
Then I opened the drawer containing our household paperwork.
Eight months earlier, I’d received a job offer in another city.
Better pay, better opportunities, and a promotion I’d worked years to earn.
