“You told me Rosalie was your tenant. You said your relationship ended years ago.”
“Mom, please.”
I stepped between them.
“How long have they been together?”
Beatrice hesitated.
“Everett said they’d reconnected earlier this year.”
Earlier this year.
When he’d been discussing having a baby with me.
I asked Beatrice for Nina’s phone number.
Everett immediately objected.
“There’s no reason to drag Nina into this.”
“She’s wearing your engagement ring. I’d say she’s already involved.”
Beatrice gave me the number.
I went upstairs, locked our bedroom door, and called.
Nina answered after several rings.
“Hello?”
“My name is Rosalie. I’m Everett’s wife.”
Silence.
Then she said, “I know who you are.”
“You know he’s married?”
“Yes. But Everett told me you two were separated.”
I looked at our wedding rings sitting together in a photograph on my dresser.
“Separated?”
“He said your marriage had been over for more than a year. You’re still sharing the house until you find somewhere else.”
