“I was there.”
My mother-in-law’s face went pale.
“You weren’t there for the whole conversation.”
“I heard enough.”
That was when my husband’s sister spoke.
“The pictures weren’t supposed to hurt her.”
I looked at her.
“You took pictures of me tied to a post.”
She swallowed.
“Mom wanted the neighbors to think you were helping.”
The words came out before she could stop them.
Everyone went still.
My mother-in-law turned toward her daughter.
“That isn’t what I said.”
“It is.”
Her daughter looked down.
“You said everyone needed to see that she was finally useful.”
The neighbor’s eyes hardened.
My husband closed his eyes for a moment.
I watched him carefully.
He had been silent when the knot was tightened.
Silent when his brother took my brace.
Silent when his sister changed my clothes.
Silent when his mother arranged the photographs.
Now he was finally hearing those words repeated outside the field.
