This one belonged to consequences.
My husband stepped forward.
The neighbor moved between us.
“Not another step.”
He stopped.
I held out my hand.
His brother placed the brace in it.
It was cold from the SUV.
I pressed it against my injured ankle and felt something inside me settle. Not because the pain had disappeared. It hadn’t. Not because everything was suddenly safe. It wasn’t.
But one small thing had been returned to me.
Something they had taken because they believed I would accept whatever they decided.
I looked at my husband’s brother.
“Thank you.”
He nodded once.
His mother stared at him as if he had betrayed the entire family.
“You are making this sound terrible,” she said.
He didn’t answer.
My husband did.
“Mom, stop.”
She turned toward him.
“Stop what? Telling the truth? She has always exaggerated everything.”
The neighbor gave a short, disbelieving laugh.
