Chapter 1: The Guest Who Forgot Her Place 027

Kayla backed toward the counter.

“You’re making this sound like something it isn’t.”

“Then explain it,” I said.

She looked at me, and for one brief moment I saw the little girl who used to crawl into my bed during thunderstorms.

Then her expression changed.

“You wouldn’t understand.”

“Try me.”

Andrew set the phone down and played the rest of the recording.

“She’s got savings,” Kayla said.

“Not a fortune, but enough to make this worthwhile.

And if I can get Andrew to make one mistake, I can use it to get what I need.”

The man asked, “What if he doesn’t?”

“He will.

He loves her, and that’s exactly why he’ll be careful.

I’ll make him think I’m trying to seduce him, then I’ll say something happened.

Men like him panic when their perfect lives are threatened.”

A pause followed.
