She looked toward the hallway.
Then she said something that made my blood run cold.
“Daniel came here once before I moved in.”
Andrew straightened.
“What?”
“He said he wanted to surprise me with a job offer.
I told him to wait outside because I didn’t want you to know we were still talking.”
“When was this?”
I asked.
“About a week before I arrived.”
“Did you let him inside?”
She nodded.
“Only for a few minutes.”
“Where did you take him?”
“The kitchen.
Then I showed him the guest room.”
“Did he come upstairs?”
“I don’t remember.”
Andrew and I exchanged a glance.
Kayla pressed her hands together.
“I wasn’t thinking about any of this then.
I thought he was going to help me.”
I closed the cabinet.
“Did you show him the office?”
“No.”
“Did he go in there?”
“I don’t know.”
That answer was becoming a pattern.
