“Then someone had access to records containing information that wasn’t publicly available.”
I thought about the documents I kept in a locked filing cabinet in our home office.
Tax returns.
Bank statements.
Copies of identification documents.
I had assumed they were safe.
“Could Daniel have gotten them from Kayla?”
I asked.
“Possibly,” the lawyer replied.
“But we should establish who had access to the records and when.”
When we returned home, Andrew and I checked the office.
The filing cabinet was locked.
The key was still where I kept it.
Nothing appeared disturbed.
Yet the folder containing my old bank statements was missing.
I opened every drawer.
We searched the shelves and the storage boxes.
Nothing.
Kayla stood in the doorway, watching us.
“I didn’t take anything,” she said quickly.
I looked at her.
“I haven’t accused you.”
“But you think I did.”
“I think someone had access to documents they shouldn’t have had.”
