Chapter 1: The Guest Who Forgot Her Place 027

“I don’t know how we got here,” I said.

She laughed without humor.

“You got here by being perfect.”

“I am not perfect.”

“You always have the right answer.

You always know what to do.

You’ve got the good marriage, the savings, the house, the husband who brings you coffee in bed.”

“Do you think any of that happened without work?”

“I think it happened because you always knew how to make people choose you.”

I sat in the chair across from her.

“Who chose me instead of you?”

Her lips trembled.

“Mom.”

The answer surprised me.

Our mother had been dead for four years.

A stroke had taken her unexpectedly, leaving us both grieving in ways we had never fully discussed.

“Mom was proud of you,” Kayla said.

“She talked about your grades, your job, your wedding.

Whenever I did something good, she’d smile and ask when I was going to get serious about my life.”
