“I was a coward,” Thomas said. “I lied to her.”
My mom turned to me. “Now do you understand? He cooked. He cleaned. He did everything Wade does. And I thought that meant he loved me.”
For the first time, I saw why she treated every kind thing Wade did like a mask.
“Now do you understand?"
“What does any of that have to do with Wade?”
“I don’t want you making the same mistake I made!”
“Loving my husband isn’t a mistake!”
I turned back to Thomas. “After the divorce. What happened?”
“I tried to stay in your life. I took you on weekends. I paid support. But your mom started canceling visits. She returned my gifts. She stopped answering my calls.”
“Loving my husband isn’t a mistake!”
“So you left.”
“I tried through a lawyer. Eventually I moved to another state.” He swallowed. “I remarried. I have a son.”
