A Woman’s 8-Year-Old Nephew Was Her Ring Bearer – At the Altar, He Refused to Hand over the Rings and Said, ‘Mom Told Me Not to Give Them to Him Until You See This’

He looked at Douglas. Then at me.

Then he lifted his small arm and pointed straight at the man I was about to marry.

“Bruce, may we have the rings?”

“Mom told me not to give them to him until you see this.”

You know that sound a room makes when it stops breathing? That was the whole church.

Bruce opened the box and lifted out the little velvet pillow that held our rings. Underneath was something folded small.

“Mom gave me this before she died,” he said. “She said if you ever married Douglas, I had to show you first. I’m not allowed to open it.”

“Mom told me not to give them to him until you see this.”

I took it. My fingers were already shaking.

Douglas saw it before I did.

All the color left his face, like someone had pulled a plug.

“Don’t,” he said.
