“Are you Bruce’s father?”
The blood drained from Douglas’s face.
“So she told him there was someone else,” Daniel finished. “I was just the guy standing closest.”
I looked at Douglas. His certainty was cracking like ice.
“There’s something else,” Daniel said. “Right before she died, she called me about Douglas.”
My stomach dropped.
“I was just the guy standing closest.”
“She told me he was dating her sister. She’d been horrified when you introduced them, but she didn’t want to wreck your happiness over her history. Then she changed her mind.”
“What does that mean? She decided to stay quiet at first?”
“Yes, then you two got serious, and she couldn’t do it anymore.” He paused. “She said she planned to tell Douglas the truth. She couldn’t prove anything without a DNA test, but he knew Bruce might be his.”
“Right before she died, she called me about Douglas.”
