So I pulled out my phone and dialed the number on the back of the photograph.

A man answered on the third ring.

I told him who I was. I told him Judy was dead. Then I asked the question out loud.

“Are you Bruce’s father?”

I put him on speaker. “You were with her.”

“We were best friends. We never slept together, not once.” He drew a breath. “She was wrecked after she told Douglas about the pregnancy. She decided if he didn’t want her baby, he didn’t get a second chance to change his mind.”
