“Why bring the twins that morning?”
“I know. I don’t want Abby and Layla growing up thinking you stop speaking to people when you hurt them.”
I looked at the girls.
“I want to be in their lives. But I won’t pay for Lucas’s silence.”
“I’m not asking you to.”
“Then ask me directly when you need help. Lucas must speak for himself.”
Hannah nodded.
For the first time, we were discussing the family we might build.
I looked at the girls.
“Mom, I need to ask you something,” Lucas said.
He’d come over alone the following week. We were discussing another visit with Hannah and the twins when he mentioned money.
“I know you said we’d talk about it.”
“We can. What do you need?”
“We don’t pay rent, but moving used up our savings. There are building fees, utilities, and hospital bills. We could use some help.”
