“Take them home, Lucas. If you want me to know you, come here and talk. Don’t bring me another three years of things you nearly did.”
I touched the dates.
On Saturday, Hannah visited with Abby and Layla while Lucas worked.
After feeding Layla, she held her as we talked.
“You learned a year ago that Lucas was missing?”
“Yes. I’d thought you weren’t speaking. Then I saw your old missing-person post.”
“And you never contacted me?”
“I kept asking him to call. He promised he would.”
She held her as we talked.
“Why bring the twins that morning?”
“After my grandmother died, she left me the apartment. Lucas wanted to see you, but he was also worried about bills. I told him he couldn’t ask for help without telling you everything.”
“So he sent you.”
“He was supposed to come with me.”
