Ryan’s mother had left when he was young. His father had raised him, and for years Ryan had believed she had simply chosen another life.
But as the wedding approached, he had started wondering about her.
Would she know he was getting married?
Would she care?
Would he regret never asking her what happened?
Emma encouraged him to find out.
Ryan didn’t want to involve his father. The subject was too painful between them.
So Emma suggested David.
My husband had quietly helped Ryan locate his mother and arrange a meeting.
I stared at David.
“That’s what this was?”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn’t you tell me last night?”
“Because Ryan asked me not to tell anyone.”
“You watched me think you were having an affair.”
His face fell.
“I know.”
“You could have told me something.”
“I didn’t know what I could say without betraying him.”
