Peter took my hand.
“You know you don’t have to prove anything to me.”
“I know.”
But I needed to prove something to myself.
Saturday arrived with rain.
Joel opened the door before I’d finished ringing.
“Thank goodness. We’re running late.”
He kissed my cheek while checking his watch.
Stephanie appeared behind him, fastening an earring.
“Hello, Dorothy.”
“Hello, love.”
Zoe came running down the hallway.
“Grandma!”
Seven years old, all flying hair and bare feet.
She threw herself against my knees.
Oliver followed, dragging his stuffed rabbit by one ear.
“Story tonight?”
“Of course.”
Joel handed me a sheet of instructions.
Dinner was in the refrigerator.
Oliver needed his medicine after eating.
Zoe had homework.
The washing machine needed emptying.
I glanced at the last instruction.
“Joel, I’m here to watch the children. I won’t be doing the laundry tonight.”
He looked up.
“What?”
