“My dinner?”
She nodded.
“I saved it.”
Stephanie looked confused.
“Zoe, sweetheart, where did you get that?”
“From school today. Mommy said we were coming to see Grandma, so I saved some.”
I crouched beside her.
“Why would you save your lunch for me?”
She looked down at her shoes.
“Because Daddy doesn’t give you dinner.”
The room went quiet.
Zoe continued, completely serious.
“I saw you go outside last time. You walked past my window toward the bus stop.”
My heart seemed to stop.
“You saw me?”
She nodded.
I remembered blowing kisses through their bedroom door.
I’d thought she was asleep.
She hadn’t been.
“I heard Daddy tell you to go,” she whispered. “I was still awake.”
She pushed the container closer.
“I thought maybe you didn’t have any.”
Stephanie covered her mouth.
I couldn’t speak.
Zoe had given up part of her own lunch because she believed nobody was feeding her grandmother.
