“To you.”
He exhaled sharply.
“I can’t do everything.”
“Neither can I.”
He was quiet.
Then he said, “Look, I’m sorry. I’ll help another time.”
I looked at the clock.
“You promised after lunch. I’ve been waiting for you.”
“I said I’m tired.”
“I was tired last night too.”
“Is this about babysitting?”
“It’s about a promise.”
He ended the call shortly afterward.
I sat there holding the phone.
Then I opened my notebook.
Beside Sunday’s date, I wrote two words.
“Didn’t come.”
Strangely, I wasn’t surprised.
That hurt more than his cancellation.
Peter found me beside the wardrobe.
“Did he cancel?”
I nodded.
He took off his cardigan.
“Well, shall we start?”
I almost said we could manage another day.
Instead, I said yes.
Together, we moved the wardrobe.
Inside it were old photographs, Christmas decorations, and a cardboard box of Joel’s school things.
