“Because you weren’t.”
“He told investigators I had entered the kitchen against restaurant policy.”
“That is enough,” Gerald murmured.
But Victor continued.
“You weren’t supposed to be operating equipment.”
A strange little thrill passed through me.
Grace looked down.
She was hiding a smile.
Judge Monroe noticed.
“Ms. Chen?”
Grace reached beneath our table.
And placed a thick blue folder on top of it.
The sound it made was almost nothing.
A soft slap against polished wood.
Victor reacted as though she had fired a gun.
His eyes went directly to the folder.
And for the first time that morning, I saw something in my husband’s face that twenty years of marriage had almost never shown me.
Fear.
Grace opened the folder.
“Your Honor, may I begin with Exhibit 42?”
Gerald stood.
“I would like to review—”
“You received these exhibits during discovery,” Grace said.
Gerald’s face tightened.
