The first time my husband called me his pack mule, twenty-three people heard him.105

“I received thousands of pages.”

“This one is six.”

Judge Monroe held out her hand.

The clerk carried the document to her.

Victor kept looking at me.

“What did you do?”

His whisper barely reached across the aisle.

I answered just as quietly.

“I remembered.”

Grace turned toward the judge.

“Exhibit 42 is the original operating agreement for Hale Restaurant Group, LLC, filed March 14, 2005.”

Victor’s head snapped toward Gerald.

His lawyer was already scanning his copy.

Grace continued.

“The original members were Victor Hale and Claire Bennett Hale.”

Judge Monroe looked down.

“Ownership percentages?”

“Forty-eight percent Mr. Hale.”

Grace paused.

“Fifty-two percent Mrs. Hale.”

The courtroom seemed to contract around me.

Victor stood halfway out of his chair.

“That agreement was replaced.”

Gerald grabbed his sleeve.

“Sit down.”

Victor did not.

“The company was reorganized.”

Judge Monroe’s voice sharpened.

“Mr. Hale.”

He sat.

Grace removed another document.

“And this is the document Mr. Hale is referring to.”
