The question stopped everyone at the doorway.
“You really think they’re going to let you keep him?”
My wife said it quietly, almost like she was reminding me of something I had forgotten.

The officer beside her stopped walking. I stood near the ambulance with our son’s blanket clutched in one hand, watching my wife stare back at me.
For the first time since I had found her in the nursery, she didn’t look angry. She looked certain.
That frightened me more than the shouting had.
Because until that moment, I had been thinking only about getting our son somewhere safe.
Now I realized my wife had been thinking about what happened next.
The paramedic carrying our baby looked at me, then at the officer. “Dad, we need to get him checked out.”
I nodded.
“I’m coming.”
My mother-in-law was still being evaluated nearby. Her face was pale, and one hand stayed against the side of her head. She kept watching her daughter through the open doorway.
