“Maybe.”

I pulled out my phone and started typing. “I know a lawyer. Well, Jen from work knows a lawyer. Her brother-in-law. He does property stuff. Zoning stuff. I’m calling him.”

“Kristin.”

“I’m calling him right now.”

“Kristin,” Dad said again, and his voice was so calm, so quiet, that I stopped. “Let’s just wait and see what the inspector says.”

“Dad, they’re going to make you tear it out.”

“Maybe they will. Maybe they won’t.”

“How can you be so calm about this?”

He looked out the window at the garden. At the corn rustling in the wind. At the tomato plants, so heavy with fruit they were bending their cages.

I didn’t know what he meant.
