Part 2 When Douglas and I were 19, we made a promise that if neither of us was married by the time we turned 60, we would find each other again

A cold sensation moved through me.

“What did she say?”

“That you had moved on. That you were seeing someone seriously. She said you had asked her not to tell me where you were because you didn’t want me disrupting your life.”

I shook my head.

“That never happened.”

“I know that now.”

“How?”

“Because I found something in the box.”

He nodded toward the wooden case.

I looked at the photographs, the folded letter, and the ring.

“What did you find?”

Douglas glanced at Lucas.

“Tell her.”

Lucas hesitated.

“It’s not my story to tell.”

“It became yours when I gave you the box.”

Lucas crossed the room and picked up the stack of photographs. He loosened the old rubber band and removed the first picture.

It showed a young woman standing beside a hospital bed.

I recognized the room immediately, though I had never seen it in person. The bed, the curtains, the narrow window overlooking a parking lot.
