“Why didn’t my mother open it?”
“Maybe she did and put it back.”
The envelope was sealed with old glue. I opened it carefully.
The letter inside was dated December 1986.
Mrs. Hart,
I am writing because our children are being separated by decisions neither of them understands. I know what my husband has told Douglas. I know what your husband has told Hannah. I also know both men believe they are acting out of love.
But love that refuses to listen becomes another kind of control.
If you have any influence over your husband, ask him to tell Hannah the truth. Douglas will not return to her while he believes she has rejected him. Hannah will not seek him while she believes he has chosen another woman.
I have enclosed the address of the place where Douglas keeps his letters. If either child comes asking, send them here.
Please do not let our fear become their future.
