My parents said to Grandma that they were taking her out to lunch. Three hours later, a nursing facility called me.

PART 2: Grandma kept the envelope pressed against her coat as we pulled into the county courthouse parking lot. For the first time since I’d picked her up, she hesitated before opening the door.
Inside, the clerk examined the house deed, then looked at Grandma strangely before turning toward her computer. Her fingers stopped over the keyboard.
“Mrs. Sterling, has anyone asked you to sign another property document recently?”
Grandma’s eyes shifted toward me. “No,” she said quietly. “But my son brought papers to my house last week.”
The clerk’s expression changed. She turned the monitor slightly away from us and reached for the phone.
“What did you find?” I asked.
She didn’t answer immediately. Then she looked at Grandma and said, “There’s a quitclaim deed attached to your property record filed three days ago. It transfers full ownership of the Sterling estate to Arthur and Wendy Sterling.”
Grandma went completely still...
