My name is John, and at 68 years old, I can finally say something I never imagined I would: I’m a college graduate.

I thought about Margaret sitting somewhere quiet, writing two pages by hand because she had things to say and was running out of time to say them.

“I want to go back inside,” I said.

“I want to meet Paul’s daughter Lily.

I want to eat whatever Ruth brought in that casserole dish.” I stood up.

“And then tomorrow, I want to make a phone call.”

“To who?” Daniel asked.

“To the head of the department,” I said.

“Because Priya took a risk to tell me the truth, and that deserves something.”

Paul got up from the grass and brushed off his trousers.

Daniel picked up the letter from the bench where I had set it and handed it back to me carefully, like it was something that needed to be kept safe.

“Mom would say don’t let it ruin tonight,” Paul said.

“I know,” I said.

“She’d also say don’t let it go unanswered.”
