“I thought it was the Whitmore name.”
He swallowed.
“It isn’t.”
A long pause.
“Mom’s father created the family trust. Under the original terms, control passes through a male descendant.”
My stomach turned.
“If I had a son, she could continue controlling the trust through him while he was a minor.”
I thought of every insult.
Every time Margaret called my daughters useless.
Every time she said family line.
Every time she told me I had failed.
But Michael wasn’t finished.
“There’s something I never told you.”
He drew a shaky breath.
“After Grace was born, I had genetic testing.”
I covered my mouth.
“My cardiologist found a hereditary condition. There was a fifty-percent chance I could pass it to another child, and it affects boys much more severely.”
He looked into the camera.
“I didn’t want to frighten you while you were pregnant with Lily.”
