I pulled the fabric down.
Richard said nothing.
But twenty minutes later, while I was filling water glasses, he asked quietly, “How long have you worked here?”
I nearly dropped the pitcher.
Margaret’s staff knew not to speak unnecessarily with guests.
“I’m not exactly staff.”
His eyes lifted.
“No?”
“I’m Michael Whitmore’s widow.”
Something changed in his face.
It was tiny.
A tightening near the mouth.
“You’re Emily.”
I stared at him.
“Yes.”
Before I could ask how he knew my name, Margaret appeared.
“There you are.”
Her smile was flawless.
“Emily, the coffee service.”
Richard kept looking at me.
Margaret’s smile tightened.
I lowered my eyes.
“Yes, Margaret.”
The speeches started shortly afterward.
Margaret stood behind a podium beneath the foundation logo and spoke about women trapped by financial dependency.
I almost laughed.
She spoke about coercive control.
I gripped a tray until my fingers hurt.
