Dr. Haskell lost his medical license.
Paige never spoke to me again. She sent me one text after the hearing. It said, I hope you’re happy. You ruined everyone’s life. I read it twice and then deleted it. A month later, I heard she’d sold the bracelet to help pay my parents’ legal bills.
Lauren was different.
Lauren came to my apartment four months after the wedding.
She stood in the hallway outside our door with a check in her hand. She didn’t knock. Daniel found her when he went out to take the recycling down.
“Your sister’s here,” he said when he came back in. “She’s just… standing there.”
I went out.
Lauren looked terrible. Thinner. No makeup. Her hair pulled back in a messy ponytail. For as long as I’d known her, Lauren had never left the house without a full face.
