My Mom Refused to Walk Me Down the Aisle and Called Me Her Greatest Regret, Then Grandpa Stopped the Wedding

Paige and Lauren followed her out. Lauren gave me one last little smirk on her way past.

My father stayed a second longer. He looked at Grandpa. Grandpa looked back.

“Richard,” Grandpa said quietly. “You look well. Paris agrees with you.”

My father’s smile flickered. Then he turned and walked out.

Daniel squeezed my hand. “I’ll see you at the end of the aisle,” he said. He kissed my forehead, carefully, so he wouldn’t mess up my makeup. Then he left too.

It was just me and Grandpa.

I looked at him. “What was that? About Paris?”

“Just making conversation.” He held out his arm. “Shall we?”

“Grandpa. Promise me you won’t do anything. We have a plan. Helen has a plan. Two weeks.”

He smiled at me. It was a gentle smile, and a little sad.

“Emmy,” he said. “I’ve waited twelve years. I’m eighty-one. I don’t buy green bananas anymore.” He patted my hand on his arm. “Besides. I’m walking my granddaughter down the aisle. What could I possibly do?”
