I
cleaned the kitchen.
Watered the herbs outside.
Started folding laundry on the couch.
Around 9:30, my phone rang.
The screen said:
Julian.
His smiling face appeared beside the name.
I answered immediately.
“You found it!”
Silence.
Then a voice I had never heard before said,
“I’m sorry, ma’am. I don’t believe we’ve met.”
I sat upright.
“Oh.”
“My name is Charlie.”
He sounded older.
Calm.
A slight Southern accent.
“I found this phone yesterday. It was lying on the ground. Took me half the night to find a charger that worked with it. Once I got enough battery into it, I saw your number listed as the emergency contact.”
Relief washed over me.
“You have no idea how happy I am to hear that.”
Charlie chuckled.
“I figured somebody was probably worried.”
“My husband searched his car twice.”
“Well, almost lost it for good.”
I smiled.
