The glass slipped from my seven-year-old daughter’s fingers and shattered across the kitchen floor.
Three seconds later, my husband turned an ordinary childhood accident into the moment that destroyed our marriage.
My daughter, Sophie, froze beside the table.
“I’m sorry, Daddy.”
Her voice was barely audible.
Daniel looked at the broken glass.

Then he looked at her.
Something in his expression frightened me immediately.
“Pick it up.”
Sophie crouched.
“Stop,” I said. “There’s broken glass everywhere. I’ll get it.”
Daniel blocked my path.
“She made the mess.”
“She’s seven.”
“She needs to learn responsibility.”
“Responsibility doesn’t mean cutting her hands.”
I reached for the broom.
Daniel grabbed it first.
Then he pointed toward the laundry room.
“Go stand by the sink, Sophie.”
My daughter looked at me.
That look still visits me sometimes.
Confusion.
Fear.
And the desperate expectation that her mother would make whatever was happening stop.
