Mark paused.
“Everything okay with him?”
“I think he’s having some marriage problems.”
Another pause.
“Oh?”
“Apparently.”
“What’s going on?”
“He hasn’t told me everything yet.”
Mark cleared his throat.
“Young marriages can be hard.”
I gripped the counter.
“Can they?”
“Yeah. Hopefully they work through it.”
I almost laughed.
“Hopefully everyone gets what they deserve.”
Silence.
“What does that mean?”
“Nothing. See you tonight.”
I hung up.

Mark was going to lie until lying stopped working.
Daniel wanted to confront Jenna that night.
I asked him to wait until we’d both spoken with our lawyers.
Then we planned Sunday dinner.
Daniel texted Jenna.
Can we have dinner at Mom and Dad’s Sunday? Mom’s making roast.
She replied, “Of course 🩷”
I hated the heart.
Sunday dinner had been normal in our family for years.
That week, it became something else.
